Star anise (often spelled “star anise”) is a star-shaped spice made from the dried fruit of an evergreen tree native to parts of Asia. Each pod typically has 6–8 pointed segments, each containing a seed. It has a strong, sweet, and licorice-like flavor, similar to anise but more intense. It is widely used in cooking, traditional medicine, and flavoring.
